Luhrmann Takes on Fitzgerald

My favorite novel is being remade on the big screen yet again. Baz Luhrmann has just acquired the rights to The Great Gatsby.

Now, I feel that the definitive film version of Fitzgerald's classic saga of love, wealth and betrayal still has yet to be made. Coppola came close, stylistically speaking. The big flaw for me was the casting of Mia Farrow (who I usually adore) as Daisy.

I view Daisy as much more than a one-dimensional rich girl. This is a woman with many facets--continually being played as "poor little me." I found Farrow's performance to be very cookie-cutter, shrill, and phoned-in. Given the right actress, I think this role could really pop, and even be Oscar-worthy.

Can Baz do it? Based on Moulin Rouge!, I would say yes. Based on Australia, I would say maybe not so much. Baz, please, whatever you do, do not cast Nicole as Daisy. I don't think I can tolerate another subpar performance.
